Arrival to Honduras

02-14-2015 Saturday (2nd entry)

From the San Pedro Sula airport we boarded a bus for a 3 hour drive south and east to La Ceiba.   On the way we stopped to eat and had a wonderful authentic Honduran meal at Power Chicken.  Though this is considered “fast food”, it is nothing like any fast food restaurant in the States.  It was like homemade bar-b-que.  As we drove on we saw other familiar fast food enterprises and we were all glad for the choice to have had our first of many authentic Honduran meals rather than American cuisine.
The drive through the following cities and country side was amazing.  We enjoyed the beautiful lush rain forest scenery between the towns.  We also encountered various unique experiences.  At a rest stop we saw a peacock with its plumes in full display, there were Brama bulls by the road side kept at bay by only a few rows of barbed wire, we drove past a recently flipped over 18 wheeler tank semi that was clearly still a safety issue and one man holding a household type fire extinguisher next to it.  And, while driving through a small city we believe that we most likely saw the exchange of a drug transaction on the side of the road happening in broad day light.  These and other sights, sounds and smells were the start of our adventure.
We arrived right at 6pm and to our surprise were deposited directly to the church on the mountain side and the beginning of the evening’s services.  Though we were all very weary, not to mention sweaty  from the trip, the worship music’s intensity and volume kept us all alert and engaged.  For those of us returning from past visits it was wonderful to reencounter some familiar faces and exchange deep and warmly felt embraces.  After the service each of us was dropped off at our respective host families and had an evening meal as we shared some time getting to know them.  Hitting the bed at about 11pm was a welcome opportunity only to be graced by the crowing of roosters and the choir of barking dogs throughout the night.
